The Whittler is an old man residing on the front porch of the Old General Store.
Appearance[]
The Whittler is described as "an elderly man, his face crumpled, like a discarded letter, his eyes like tire tracks, hidden beneath the shady brim of a straw cowboy hat". He is constantly whittling small figurines out of elm wood while whistling sad songs. When looking into his eyes, the children of Night Vale see "every single constellation of the night sky". [1]
History[]
The Whittler appeared one day in the Scrublands, along the Old General Store. People of Night Vale came to visit him. He whittled small figurines for them; Wilson Levy and Amber Akinyi received a small koala, Cecil received a seaplane, and Carlos received a rose. He also carved people's faces when they felt bad about themselves, one person undergoing such a procedure being Harrison Kip. He then on moved to whittling houses, roads, and monuments, creating a new neighborhood in the Scrublands. He then carved a podium for people to observe and a bride for himself to marry. After standing still for some time, the Whittler was touched by Larry Leroy, after which he turned to dust, along the Old General Store and all of his creations.[1]
