Night Vale appears to be dealing with a case of the Old Media Blues. With the influx of new media such as the Internet, some other forms of presenting information are expected to lose some steam. The Night Vale Daily Journal has been hit particularly hard due to "the economic downturn and a massive decline in the literate population."
It is ironic that the Daily Journal seem to be struggling, however, as radio is also considered to be a part of the old media industry. In spite of that fact, Cecil's show seems to be popular in town and receives regular input from Night Vale citizens.
